After 20 years on Wall Street, John Jay Gebhardt decided to pursue a career as an artist. His main interest is to create an image where color and brush stroke are ascendant. He has done just that in his landscapes from Italy and upstate New York. Each one tells the story of the place and time with vigorous brushstrokes and pulsing light.

Mostly painting in plein air, Mr. Gebhardt may return to a scene over and over until the painting is finished. Sometimes he will return a year or two later, so that he may see it during the same time of year. “I know the sky is likely to be the same color, deep purple, for example, or that the trees will have the same amount of leaves on them, or that the horses are likely to be grazing.”
